Applied top, open pontil. 9 1/2". Early 1850's. Jacob Wendell took over the Thomas B. Smith company after he died and purchased the company from his widow. Ironically, Wendell partnered up with a guy name Espy and they eventually parted ways. This bottle has the TBS initials on the base and the Espy name on the shoulder slugged out. Why the TBS on the base? Probably the mold was made and instead of replacing it they added the Wendell and Espy name eventually slugging out Espy. They were listed in directories as being successful pickle merchants. This example is a light greenish aqua and has been professionally cleaned. Nasty pontil, looks very presentable. Grade 8.
